The TelTel team is headquartered in the Silicon Valley of California, USA. We are fused together by the vision to create true "nonstop communication software" for people all around the world. We also believe that the best product will be born through constant and open communication between developers and users. So, the scope of the TelTel team will grow alongside with our users, spreading our team to wherever we can serve our users the best.

TelTel is a managed peer-to-peer Internet telephony application. The term managed peer-to-peer describes a powerful and flexible combination of the client-server and the peer-to-peer architectures. Routing and repository services reside centrally. This means that clients can come and go without affecting the quality of service. This also means that your presence information is always accurate. Services, such as media exchange, that can be pushed to the edge are handled directly by the clients as peers. This distributes the load among the end users and ensures scalability.

TelTel uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) as its underlying messaging protocol. SIP, in addition to being an open standard that is fast becoming the industry standard, is specifically designed to take advantage of this mixed approach. SIP is quite simply the best option and being an open standard promises that TelTel will integrate smoothly with many other applications and networks.

How much does it cost to use TelTel?

TelTel has two major calling functions: PC-to-PC calls and TelTel-Out calls.

  • PC-to-PC: Nothing. It is absolutely free to make PC-to-PC calls in TelTel.

  • PC-to-Phone: You can purchase TelTel Credits and make phone calls from your TelTel Softphone. Our TelTel-Out service covers most parts of the world. For exact rates, please read our rate table.

What equipment and software do I need to use TelTel?

To use TelTel, you need the following hardware and software components:

  • Operating System - Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
  • Processor - 400 MHz or faster recommended. 266 MHz minimum.
  • Memory - 64 MB RAM minimum.
  • Browser - Microsoft IE, version 5 or greater.
  • A sound card
  • A computer headset with a built-in microphone - Although you can use TelTel on a PC with speakers and a microphone, the sound quality is much better with a computer headset.
  • An Internet connection - Dial-up users need a working connection speed of 33.6 Kbps or greater.
  • The TelTel client application - You will be prompted to download the client the first time you use TelTel.

Does my Internet connection speed affect the sound quality?

Users with a broadband (high speed) Internet connection will experience the best sound quality, significantly better than a typical landline telephone.

However, the sound quality for dial-up users still compares favorably with the sound quality of a cell phone.

I need to talk to a friend who is rarely online/available. What can I do?

If your friend is not available to talk, you can:

Or simply right click on his or her name in your Friend List to see available options.

Can other people who use my computer also use TelTel?

Of course. However, you will probably want anyone else who uses your computer to get his or her own TelTel account since each account is associated with a single Friend List.

How do I start an instant text conversation?

There are three ways you can do that:

  1. Click on the instant text conversation button at the main window, and select your Friend's name. A text conversation window will appear, and you can start typing.

  2. Select your Friend, and then click on the instant text conversation button at the main window. A text conversation window will appear, and you can start typing.

  3. Select your Friend, and then right click on your mouse, then select "Start a text conversation". An instant text conversation window will appear, and you can start typing.

How do I launch the dial-pad?

On the bottom half of the main screen, on the right-hand side, is an arrow button. Click on the button to display the dial-pad. Click on the reverse arrow button to hide it again. You can use the dial-pad to enter the number you want to dial, and you can also use it to enter an extension number.

What is the timestamp in a text conversation window and how do I display/hide it?

A timestamp lets you know when a text message is sent or received.

To display/hide the timestamp, just click on the timestamp button on your text conversation window.

Click on it again to hide/display the timestamp.

How do I invite a Friend who is already a TelTel user?

If you know his/her TelTel account,

  1. Click on the Add a Friend button in the main window.

  2. Choose "Invite by email" and click "Next".

  3. At the system's prompting, enter your Friend's TelTel account.

  4. The system will search our database. If your Friend's account is found, an invitation will be sent, and the next time your Friend launches TelTel, he/she will see your invitation. If the email account is not found, you can send an invitation email to that account or to another account to invite your friend in becoming a TelTel Friend.

How to remove a Friend?

Select a Friend, and right click on the mouse. Then, select the option "Remove the Friend", and you will not see this Friend on your Friend List. However, this Friend will still receive your presence information, and he/she can still invite you to start a voice conversation and a text conversation.

What should I do if I see the "Network Connectivity Lost" message when I try to login?

If TelTel has worked on your machine in the past, check whether your network connection is working properly. (For example, can you visit websites?) If your network connection is working, you might have tried to login during a system upgrade or outage. Please check the Announcements board of our forum for system status updates.

TelTel works with most NATs and many firewalls. However, if you have never been able to login on this machine and you are behind a firewall or NAT, TelTel might not be compatible with your network setup. Please post your problem on the TelTel Technical Support board in our forum. Provide as much information as you can about your NAT or firewall hardware/firmware/software version.

What should I do if I have problems downloading and installing TelTel?

If you are having problems downloading the TelTel installer, select Save (instead of Open) to save the TelTel installer to your download folder. To install TelTel, double-click on the file TelTel-Installer.exe.

If you are having problems installing TelTel, do the following:

  1. Close all open Windows applications.

To activate your new password, click on the link contained in the email. (If you can no longer access this account, you must register again using a new email address.)

I can't hear anything. (My friends can't hear me. There's an echo in the background.) What do I do?

If the sound quality is poor and your headset is functional, you can use the Tuning Wizard to help you adjust your sound settings easily and quickly. To begin tuning, go to Tools >> Tuning Wizard.

Users behind a firewall might still have problems after successful tuning. If you suspect that your firewall might be the problem, please visit the Technical Support board in our forum.

When do my TelTel credits expire?

Your TelTel credits are valid for 180 days, starting from the day of your purchase. Whenever you purchase new credits, the 6 month calculation will restart again from the day of the new purchase. For example: First purchase happened on January 1, expiration date is 180 days after. Second purchase happened on March 1, then the new expiration date is another 180 days after. Expired credits will no longer be available and accessible.

What happens when my TelTel credits run out?

This happens when you see your credit balance as $0.000. You will still be able to use non-paid TelTel services as usual, but your TelTel-Out and TelTel Call-Forwarding service will be temporarily suspended until you purchase new TelTel credits again.

Currently, the only package available for TelTel Group is our Business Premium Package. Please visit TelTel Store to purchase the package. The person who pays for the package will become the Admin of the group. When you are going through the steps of purchasing the product, you will be asked to select the size of your package, decide on your TelTel Group account - an unique email address, and the duration of your package subscription. At the end of the purchase process, you will have a TelTel Group ready. You can go to My TelTel, and click on the tab "My Groups" and read your group information and available settings. Please note that Global Access numbers are not immediately available. When the number has been setup, you will receive an email.

Under My TelTel -> My Groups -> Select Group -> Members, click on the button "Add", and enter the person's TelTel account. The system will then search for this person, and when found, the person will be automatically added to your TelTel Group. If the person you want to add to your group is not yet a TelTel user, please ask this person to download a TelTel client, and sign up for a TelTel account in order to proceed.

The TelTel Group account that the Admin signed up is the "number" that members and other people can call from their TelTel softphone. Just enter the TelTel Group account into the interactive monitor and click on dial to be connected with the group voice attendant. If the group has purchased Global Access numbers (local numbers of different cities in the world), then you can also call the number from any regular phone or TelTel softphone to access the group voice attendant.

Part of the prompts have already been provided by TelTel. In order to record customized messages, the Admin needs to go to My Groups -> Select Group -> Settings -> Management Code, and set the management code. Then the Admin can call in the group voice attendant, enter the management code, and follow the instructions for recording. Should you require more assistance, please contact our sales department.

All the management you need to do can be accomplished in the different menus under My TelTel -> My Groups -> Select Group. As the Admin, you have the authority to override and control some functional settings of your group. All the editable items will be displayed for you, and the rest hidden to protect member privacy. Should you require more assistance, please contact our sales department.

All the management you need to do can be accomplished in the different menus under My TelTel -> My Groups -> Select Group. As a member, you only have limited access to the information and options provided. Your personal settings are visible to you and parts of it visible to your Admin.

Only the Admin of the group can purchase TelTel credits and optional add-ons for the group from TelTel Store. The system will ask the purchaser to select who/what the purchase is for when the option is available.

Only the Admin of the group can exercise these options. Package upgrade and extensions are available in the TelTel Store. Re-activation is available from My TelTel -> My Groups -> Select Group. Expired group information will be kept on the system for a period of time subject to TelTel's discretion.

For downgrade, the Admin should contact our sales department. If the package subscription is still valid when the request is made, unused months will be refunded back to the group's credit pool.

The group credits will be returned back to the Admin's personal TelTel credits balance account.

TelTel Group packages and add-on purchases can be cancelled during subscription period. Please contact our sales department for assistance. However, we only provide refunds in TelTel credits. If you believe a purchase charge was made in error, please contact PayPal's dispute department. For more details regarding our refund policy, please read our end user license agreement.

We will be more than glad to have someone help you with your purchases and setups. For more details, please contact our sales department.
